Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesia imported 2.053 million tons of raw sugar in the year ended on August 23, 2014, accounting for 73.3 percent of the quota of 2.8 million tons.

To meet the quota of 2.8 million tons, the Trade Ministry had issued permits to import 2.67 million tons, Director General of Foreign Trade at the Trade Ministry Partogi Pangaribuan said at a discussion with journalists here on Friday.

"We tighten the issuance of permits this year," he said.

The Trade Ministry has not issued permits to import the remaining quota of 113.6 thousand tons, he said.

"The remaining quota is 133.6 thousand tons, but we have not issued permits to import it," he said.

The permits to import 502 thousand tons of 2.67 million tons were only issued late July 2014, he said.

This year the Trade Ministry also has issued a permit to state logistics board (Bulog) to import 328 thousand tons of white crystal sugar. However, only 21.6 thousand tons of 328 thousand tons had been imported, he said.

The government also issued permits to export-oriented food and beverage industries and bonded zones to import 62 thousand tons of raw sugar this year. However, only 42 thousand tons or 67 percent of the quota had been imported until August 23, 2014, he added. (WDY)
