Denpasar (Antara Bali) -  Bali's export value of metal handicraft products surged 72.15 percent to US$5.35 million in the first five months of the year.

In the same period last year, Bali's exports of silver ornaments  were worth only US$3.11 million, the provincial industry and trade office said.

The export volume, however, declined 21.70 percent  from 10.19 units  to 7.98 million units of various types of silver ornaments, data at the office showed.

Silver ornaments, mainly from the area of Celuk in the regency of Gianyar, contributed 2.5 percent to Bali's total export earning of US$215.04 million in the five months period.

Ni Wayan Suma, a silverware craft man in Celuk said silver ornament from Celuk had been exported mainly to Singapore and Hong Kong with buyers mainly foreign tourists.

Many traders from Singapore and Hong Kong imported jewelry including gold, diamond and silver ornaments  from Bali to be sold to foreign tourists , Suma said. (WDY)
