Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Jakarta police conducted a sweep operation in the national capital on Tuesday to identify and take action against under-age motorists.

The head of the East Jakarta traffic police unit, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Supoyo, stated that the police had seized 35 motorcycles so far, which were being used by school students who were underage and did not have a license.

"The sweep operations were conducted in Pasar Genjing (Matraman) and at Jalan DI Panjaitan," he said, adding that the confiscated motorcycles would be returned to their owners after the parents concerned signed a statement that they would not allow their children to ride motorcycles.

The Tambora police in West Jakarta also conducted a similar operation, in which 15 motorcycles used by underage schoolchildren without a driving license¿were seized.

"Most of them neither had a license nor the necessary motorcycle documents," said Adjunct Commissioner Budi Harsono, the chief of the traffic police unit of Tambora police.

He said police department officials were planning to provide counseling sessions at schools and step up their supervision of students riding motorcycles.
