Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Transportation Minister E.E, Mangindaan said as many as 12 new airports will be operational at several areas in the country in 2013 in order to meet a high demand.

"Transportation Ministry has planned to operate 12 new airports in 2013," Mangindaan made the remarks through a press release received here on Sunday.

The minister said  the 12 new airports are Kuala Namu in Medan (North Sumatra), Muara Bungo in Jambi, Pekon Serai in West Lampung, Bone Airport in South Sulawesi, Bawean Airport in East Java, Sumarorong Airport in Mamasa, and Kufar Airport in East Seram.

The other ones are Tual Baru and Saumlaki Baru Airports, both in Maluku, Waisai Airport in Raja Ampat, Kamanap Baru Airport in Serui, and Waghete Baru Airport.

According to him, the development of the new airports is aimed to meet the growing demand of air transportation due to facilities of the old airports cannot be expanded.

He said the Ministry will also develop new airport at metropolitan cities as a supporting facilities to lessen the rapid growing number of passengers in main airports. (*/DWA)
