Denpasar (Antara Bali) - Thousands of vehicles bound for Gilimanuk ferry port in Jembrana district, Bali, were seen stuck in a 15-kilometre-long traffic jam on Thursday morning.
The long queues of vehicles stretched from the port to as far as the traffic monitoring post at Segara Rupek in Bali Barat National Park area, Jembrana district.
Police officials had instructed the drivers of private cars, buses, and trucks to remain in line so as to not obstruct the flow of traffic from Gilimanuk toward Denpasar.
But the police seemed unable to control the rising number of vehicles, driven by Lebaran holiday travelers, which had been entering the Gilimanuk port since 4 am on Thursday.
The line of vehicles in the left lane was earlier in order, but later got totally disorganized after impatient drivers started breaking the queue. Consequently, the flow of vehicles from Gilimanuk port to Denpasar was disrupted, leading to the traffic jam. The congestion was so heavy that even motorcyclists were stranded.
"I left Denpasar an hour after midnight. It is 7 am now and I am still trapped on the road to Gilimanuk port," said Sujianto, a motorcyclist who wanted to return to East Java to celebrate Lebaran with his families and relatives.(IGT)
