Vice President Inaugurates ASEAN Police Conference

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla inaugurated the 35th ASEAN Police Conference (ASEANAPOL) on regional security on August 4, in Jakarta, participated by member delegations of police chiefs from ten ASEAN countries and representatives of partner countries.

"The task of the police is to protect and serve the people that can be achieved through professionalism and strong cooperation, especially in the form of ASEANAPOL," the vice president stated while delivering an opening speech at the conference.

According to Kalla, information exchange and cooperation among the ASEAN countries are necessary for implementing security measures to prevent crimes, such as human trafficking, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and terrorism.

Several state officials who accompanied the vice president to attend the conference were Coordinating Minister for Politics Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno and National Police Chief General Badrodin Haiti, among others.

The vice president and the National Police chief welcomed several police chiefs and senior police officers from numerous participating countries including Brunei Darussalam, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand.

The other participating countries are Timor Leste, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, China, South Korea, and Russia along with the representatives of the Interpol.

The chairman of the ASEANAPOL Conference announced that it will be held on August 4-7, 2015.

The agenda to be discussed in the conference are issues related to transnational crimes, such as drug trafficking, cybercrime, illegal fishing, and human trafficking, among others. (WDY)
