Yogyakarta To Host ASEAN Insurance Conference

Yogyakarta (Antara Bali) - The ASEAN Insurance Council (AIC) has appointed Yogyakarta to host ASEAN Insurance Conference on November 23 to discuss ways to strengthen insurance industry in ASEAN member states.

The conference will bring together insurance industrial operators and regulators from throughout ASEAN, AIC Secretary General  Evelina F. Pietruschka said here on Monday.

"We want to revive the role of insurance industry as a vital pillar to boost economic growth in ASEAN member states," she said.

Before taking part in the conference, the insurance industrial operators will attend three special forums, including a council of bureau (COB) meeting to discuss motor vehicle insurance scheme in ASEAN member states, and ASEAN Insurance Education Committee (AIEC) meeting to discuss the development of insurance education prohram.

The third forum is ASEAN Natural Disasters Research Works Sharing (ANDREWS).
Evelin said the insurance industry has not been as popular as the banking industry. Right now nearly 3 percent of the ASEAN population which reach 640 million have benefited from insurance industry.

In fact, if the insurance industry is developed seriously in all ASEAN member states, the insurance industry will be able not only to cover population insurance but also to serve as financing institution for infrastructure development in the region.

"Insurance industry is not only engaged in the sale of insurance products but also is able to support the financing of development programs in ASEAN member states," she said. (WDY)
