President to Natuna to Observe Military Exercise

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - President Joko Widodo left for Natuna island in the province of Riau Islands here on Thursday for a working visit and also to observe the Angkasa Yudha Air Force exercise 2016 as part of the 71st Defense Forces anniversary event.

He departed from  Halim Perdanakusuma air base here at 7am in the company of First Lady Iriana aboard presidential plane "Indonesia Satu".

His entourage also included a number of state officials such as Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung.

Pramono Anung said on Wednesday the Head of State would observe the Angkasa Yudha 2016 exercise that would involve dozens of fighter jets on the island measuring 1,900 square kilometers.

During the drill the Indonesian Air Force's Sukhoi 27/30 MK and F-16 Fighting Falcon would carry  out bombings on several targets in the form of ships in the sea directly bordering the South China Sea.

Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Susi Pudjiastuti said earlier President Joko Widodo is also scheduled to visit the location of a cold storage development project to store fishermen's catch with a capacity of 3,000 ton.

The facility will be built by Perum Perikanan Indonesia (Perindo) at the integrated fishery center in the Lampa strait as part of fishery industrial development in Indonesia. (WDY)
