Energy Ministry Recommends Construction Of Nuclear Power Plant In 2024

Yogyakarta (Antara Bali) - The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has recommended the construction of a nuclear power plant in Indonesia in 2014, according to Chief of the National Atomic Energy Agency (Batan) Djarot S Wisnubroto.

"Therefore, Batan expects the government to launch "go nuclear" in 2015 so the recommendation from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry can be realized soon," he said in Yogyakarta on Wednesday.

Normally, it takes seven to ten years to build a nuclear power plant, he said.

"Thus, the calculation will be accurate if the government launches "go nuclear" in 2015. It takes a long time to build a nuclear power plant as we have to exercise caution  and give priority to security," he said.

It takes three years for Batam to conduct a survey and decide a site for the construction of a nuclear power plant. In addition, it  must also ensure the earthquake track record of the site for the nuclear power plant to up to 1,000 years ahead, he pointed out.

"So we will not play the game with security. If the plan for the construction of a nuclear power plant in Bangka Belitung is realized it will be able to supply 5,000 megawatts of electrical power," he said. (WDY)
