20 Foreign Winners of Indonesian Writing Contest Join Flag-Raising Ceremony

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - A total of 20 foreign nationals who won the Indonesian language speech and essay writing contests attended the flag-hoisting ceremony to commemorate the country's 70th Independence Day at the State Palace's yard here, Monday.

"The invitation is reflective of our highest appreciation for their dedication to learning and introducing the Indonesian language, culture, and traditions internationally," Director General of Cultural Affairs of the Education and Culture Ministry Prof. Kacung Maridjan stated.

Non-native Indonesian speakers from various countries not only attended the flag-raising ceremony on the historic day of Indonesia's independence but would also be given an opportunity to visit the resort island of Bali, he noted.

"This is our effort to strengthen international friendship for the sake of increasing the role of Indonesian language for communication among nations," he affirmed.

Shortly after their arrival in Bali, the participating foreign nationals were urged to share their experiences through social media, for instance, by saying that they are in Bali, Indonesia," Maridjan remarked.

A non-native Indonesian speaker named Maik van Oudenaarden said he has been learning Indonesian language over the past year.

"Three most important aspects for learning a foreign language are recreation, education, and cooperation," noted a Dutchman. (WDY)
