Baswedan's Case Must Be Settled This Year: Police Chief

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - National Police (Polri) Chief General Badrodin Haiti has said that the case of maltreatment allegedly committed by Novel Baswedan, a Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigator, must be settled this year itself.

"We have summoned him now because the case will become outdated by next year. It should be settled this year so that the complainant in the case will not sue Polri," the national police chief stated after offering Friday prayers along with laborers at the National Monument Square here.

He noted that Baswedan had been summoned to fulfill two demands made by prosecutors' office: for additional explanations and a reconstruction of the case.

"We have summoned him for what prosecutors have demanded. We summoned him twice before but he failed to honor our summons," he pointed out.

Haiti observed that Baswedan should have not been arrested as he is a member of the police. "(But) he should have let himself be investigated," he added.

The police chief also ruled out political motives behind the arrest of the KPK investigator. "There is no motive. It is purely an enforcement of the law."
The police arrested Baswedan at his house in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, early on Friday.

He has been accused of maltreatment in a 2004 case. (WDY)
