Jakarta (Antara Bali) - International Labor Day or May Day was observed peacefully in Jakarta, stated Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Unggung Cahyono.
"Labor Day was observed favorably as there was no mass movement, which might have raised concern," Unggung noted here on Friday.
He remarked that police officers monitored the activities of about 56 thousand workers who boarded some 459 buses and 94 private vehicles to the places where they held rallies.
The Jakarta Police chief stated that the number of laborers who observed International Labor Day was smaller than earlier expected.
It was earlier forecast that some 178 thousand laborers will stage rallies during the May Day anniversary celebrations.
He affirmed that this year, the police did not secure the city borders as they did during the May Day celebrations in 2014.
"It is different as compared to last year when the police secured the borders as the city was open to the laborers who came from outside Jakarta," he pointed out.
Police officers escorted the workers from West Java and then handed over the charge to the Jakarta police officers at the 42-kilometer mark of the Karawang Toll Road.
The Jakarta police then escorted the laborers to the rally locations such as the Bung Karno Sport Stadium (GBK) in Senayan, the Hotel Indonesia Traffic Circle, the office of the Manpower Ministry, and the State Palace.
The joint security agencies mobilized 14,404 personnel to secure the 2015 May Day celebrations. (WDY)
