Jakarta (Antara Bali) -- The Ministry of National Planning and Development is introducing an updated version of the Indonesia Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (IBSAP) 2003-2020, which contains biodiversity identified more recently and new plans.
Since the document was framed in 2003, only 40 percent of its strategies and action plans have been implemented, Deputy of Natural Resources and Environment of the ministry, Endah Murniningtyas, said at the IBSAP Updates 2015-2020 seminar here on Wednesday.
"The document is not practical yet. Also, in the last decade, numerous new discoveries of flora and fauna, germplasm, and others have been made," Murniningtyas pointed out.
According to the ministry official, as many as 174 scientists from the Ministry of National Planning and Development, Ministry of Environment, and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) were involved in updating the IBSAP.
"By updating the strategies and action plans, we aim to make the document more comprehensive and applicable," Murniningtyas explained.
Updating the document is also aimed at synergizing the action plans on the management of biodiversity by all stakeholders.
The IBSAP document was updated along the lines of global policies, such as the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity 2011-2020.
In addition, the government also wants to adjust the document to the Protocol Cartagena and the Nagoya Protocol, which concerns the setting of access and sharing of benefits of genetic resources that were ratified by law number 11/ 2013.
The strategies and action plan document consists of eight chapters. They explain the current status of biodiversity and its management, exploration and exploitation, the economic contribution of biodiversity, as well as budget required and information related to its management, among others.
The other issues concern biodiversity management organization, resource mobilization, supervision and evaluation, as well as policies, strategies, and an action plan for biodiversity management. (WDY)
