Badminton Team Eyes Gold Medals

Palembang (Antara Bali) - Indonesia's national badminton team is focused on winning gold medals at the Islamic Solidarity Games 2013 here, although the players to be fielded are third tier players.

The games are to be held from September 22 to October 1. "Putu Roi and fellows will still be given the task of winning gold medals, although they are third-tier players or ranked one-hundredth in the world," head of public relations of the ISG executive committee for badminton, Rustam Imron, said here on Saturday.

He noted that pursuing gold medals was realistic because Indonesian teams are considered superior among the members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

"I do not mean to underestimate participants from other countries, but only two countries present strong competition for medals in the event, namely Indonesia and Malaysia," he said.

Seven gold medals will be awarded for competition by 11 country participants from Turkmenistan, Malaysia, Tajikistan, Algeria, Turkey, Uganda and Indonesia, the host.

Indonesia plans to field Putu Roi Danu in the men's single and Risky in the women's single events, in addition to Fitriani and Intan Wijayanti, who recently emerged as champions on the national circuit. (*/DWA)
