US to Open for RI's Forestry Product

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The US is ready to open its market for Indonesian forestry products, citing the nation's consistency in lowering greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation rate and preserving tropical forests.

The matter surfaced at a meeting between Indonesian Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan and US Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs Kerri-Ann Jones at the former's office here on Monday.

Zulkifli said the US is certain to enhance bilateral cooperation with Indonesia in the forestry field as part of efforts to lower global greenhouse gas emissions.

"He (Kerri-Ann Jones) said it is not easy to unite countries in the world. Therefore, the US is ready to enhance bilateral ties with Indonesia in the forestry field," Zulkifli said.

He said the cooperation will be based on a partnership scheme. At the meeting, Zulkifli also briefed Kerri-Ann Jones on a moratorium on the issuance of new permits to exploit primary forests and peat lands.

Indonesia not only protects its forests but also empowers nearby people to improve their living standard, he said.

Indonesia has committed itself to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent with the country's own efforts and by 41 percent with foreign help by 2020 according to the target set at the G20 Summit in 2009. (*/DWA)
