Indonesia Condemns Sunday Church Bombings In Egypt

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The Indonesian government condemns the bombings at the churches in Tahta and Alexandria in Egypt on Sunday, April 9 that resulted in many deaths and injuries to several people.

The Indonesian government also denounces the chain of terror acts in Egypt that targeted civilians during their prayers, according to a press statement from the Indonesian Foreign Ministry in Jakarta on Monday.

The Indonesian government will continue to provide updates on the condition in Egypt and expresses sympathy and grief to the Egyptian government and people, especially to the families of the victims.

"The Indonesian government expresses full solidarity to its Egyptian counterpart and the people in this difficult time. Indonesia is certain that the Egyptian government will unveil the identity of the terrorists and bring them to court," the press statement noted.

The Indonesian Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, will continue to communicate with the Indonesian community in Egypt. In Alexandria, there are 128 Indonesians in addition to 21 people in Tahta.

According to the statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo, until now, no reports have been received of any Indonesian casualties in the recent terror acts.  
   
At least 36 people have died and more than 100 have been wounded in both attacks, the act being the most recent one targeting minorities by the militia.

No statement has yet been issued regarding who was behind the attacks that occurred a week before Easter day and Pope Francis' visits to Egypt this month.

The first bomb exploded in Tahta, a city in Nile Delta, around 100 kilometers outside Cairo, leaving at least 25 dead and causing injuries to more than 78 people, the Egyptian Health Ministry stated.

The second attack, which occurred several hours after the first bomb explosion, was carried out by a suicide bomber in Alexandria and led to the deaths of 11 people, including three policemen and wounded 35 others.(WDY)
