Manado (Antara Bali) - A statue has been built in the regency of Sitaro, North Sulawesi, in honor of the country's founding father and first president Soekarno.

When inaugurating the monument here on Tuesday,  North Sulawesi Governor  Sinyo Harry Sarundajang expressed his appreciation for the respectful attitude demonstrated by the local people and district administration that built the monument to the country's great leader.

A big nation  highly values the services and sacrifice of its heroes, Sinyo said quoting the words Soekarno often said.

"Soekarno's teaching that inspires nationalism and patriotism  is still relevant and alive until today," he said.

Nationalism, patriotism  and love for the country that strongly marked Soekarno's teaching should be preserved, he added. Soekarno was the founder of Pancasila, the country's  five tenet ideology.

Sitaro Regent  Toni Supit said the monument was built  in  memory of Soekarno's visit 60 years ago to that area. (*/DWA)
