"President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has given directives for the acceleration of development in disadvantaged regions," Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Agung Laksono said here on Thursday.
The minister said the government needed to issue a special policy, a special budget and a special intensification program to accelerate development and improve the welfare of people in those regions.
He said for that purpose the government would in the coming years work out a budget formulation, program and concrete actions in the field so that the target would be achieved.
"Concrete actions in the field will improve the economic conditions and people's prosperity in the regions, and this will be in line with the president's directives," Agung said.
The chief people's welfare minister also said that in order to realize the plan the central government and regional administrations needed to synergize.
"With good synergy, what is expected in the development could be realized soon, particularly the acceleration of development in Indonesia's eastern regions and other disadvantaged areas," Agung said.
Yet, the minister did not explain the government's time-line for the development of the advantaged regions.
"The government's target is to carry out development as soon as possible. What is important is that this program is to be carried out well with concrete actions in the field," he said.(*)
