Denpasar (Antaranews Bali) - At least 40 fishing boats caught fire at Benoa Port, here, Monday.
"Inactive fire hydrants posed a problem at the port. The lack of fire hydrant was slowing down our effort to extinguish the fires," IB Yoga, head of emergency division of the Denpasar disaster mitigation office, said here on Monday evening.
The boats were parked close to each others and that condition sped up the flames and hampered the efforts to extinguish the blaze.
Yoga appealed the boat owners to notice the dock management to avoid fires. Strong wind also fueled bigger fires.
"Boat owners should also have a special response unit to handle emergency situation," Yoga said.
Eleven fire engines and one water canon were deployed to put out the blaze.
The Pelindo 3 also deployed several boats to help extinguish the fires.
The fire began on Monday morning and several fire brigade officers were deployed to put out the fire.
However, the fire reoccurred on Monday evening and were immediately dealt with by a number of officers and local people. (WDY)
