Kendari, SE.Sulawesi (Antara Bali) - President of Indonesia Joko Widodo is scheduled to observe several infrastructure development projects in Wakatobi district, Southeast Sulawesi province, on September 5, 2015.

"The president's agenda to observe several development projects in Wakatobi is part of the series of presidential visits in order to open the United Cities and Local Governments Asia-Pacific (UCLG ASPAC) meeting, which will be attended by 176 regents and governors in the Asia Pacific region," Head of administration of Wakatobi Hugua noted here on Tuesday.

According to Hugua, some of the projects that will be observed by the president include the construction of a gas power plant with a capacity of 2 x 3 megawatts, the construction of Panggulubelo seaport, and the Institute of Fishery Genetic Engineering.

In addition, the president will also inaugurate the Wakatobi International Festival and the International Fishery School.

"Several projects to be observed by the president hold strategic value for developing and improving the welfare of the people in Wakatobi in particular and Indonesia in general," he emphasized.

The UCLG ASPAC meeting will discuss several important issues concerning the UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Program) based on the perspectives of interests, needs, and the considerations of the local administration.

"We hope the discussion on important issues can create a commitment to support sustainable urban development and the new urban agenda to be approved in HABITAT III (the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development)," he remarked.

Being the host of the meeting, the UCLG ASPAC will help boost Wakatobi's image internationally, Hugua affirmed.

"After being known by the world community, Wakatobi will be able to attract increasingly more number of foreign tourists," he added. (WDY)
