Medan, N Sumatra (Antara Bali) - Sports minister Imam Nahrawi officially opened the Asia Women's U-16 Basketball Championship that will last until August 9 here on Sunday.

In his speech the minister expressed appreciation to FIBA that has given confidence to Indonesia in this case Medan to host the prestigious event.

"We received guests of honor from across Asia. On behalf of the government we welcome and also the championship," he said.

The minister also expressed appreciation to the national basketball association Perbasi that has concretely continued improving the performance of the country's basketball players.

In the recent Southeast Asian Games, Indonesia was able to win a silver medal, he said.

"I hope in this championship Indonesia could win a gold medal as we hope for. Certainly it will take a hard work," he said.

The president of FIBA Asia, Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani, said on the occasion that the participants of the event were the best players who had been chosen through tight selection.

"We thank Indonesia for having been willing to become the host of the event and organized it well," he said.

The championship is participated in by 12 countries including China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, China Taipei, Thailand, Uzbekistan and Indonesia. (WDY)
