Denpasar, Bali (Antara Bali) -- As many as 1.51 million foreign tourists visited Bali in the January to May period this year, which is a 11.30 percent rise from that in the same period last year.

The January to May period of 2014 recorded 1.39 million foreign tourist arrivals in the resort island.

"Most tourists visited directly from their country through Ngurah Rai Airport, while only 42,145 people used the seaport while on cruise," Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali Panusunan Siregar said here on Wednesday.

He added that foreign tourist visits in May 2015 was recorded at 295,973, of which as many as 287,141 people entered the province through Ngurah Rai Airport and 8,832 came via the seaport.

"Foreign tourist arrivals increased 3.48 percent from that in the same month last year," Siregar affirmed.

Of the top ten countries from where tourists visit Bali, the number of tourists from eight increased significantly.

Australia ranks first from among these eight countries. In 2014, 8.69 percent of the 360,144 tourists who visited in the first five months of 2014 were from the neighboring country. This figure rose to 391,423 in the first five months of 2015.

Chinese tourists come in second with a 27.13 percent increase from the 221,106 tourist visits in 2014 to 281,102 tourists this year; Japan ranks third, recording a jump from 73,469 tourists to 87,377, an increase of 18.93 percent.

South Korea posted an increase of 11.99 percent from 56,120 tourist arrivals in the first five months of 2014 to 62,849 in the same period this year.

In addition, British tourists take up the seventh position with a 15.80 percent surge from 46,728 to 54,112.

American tourists rank eighth with an increase of 14.31 percent from 44,275 to 50,611.

Moreover, the number of Taiwanese tourists grew 9.70 percent from 45,842 to 50,289, while the number of Indian tourists rose 40.37 percent from 32,652 to 45,832. (WDY)
