Depok, West Java (Antara Bali) - President Joko Widodo attended a ceremony at the Mobile Bridage Kelapa Dua Command Station in Jakarta's southern outskirts of Depot, on Wednesday morning, to commemorate the Indonesian Police's (Polri's) 69th anniversary, commonly called Bhayangkara Day.

Present during the ceremony were the president in the company of First Lady Iriana, Vice President Jusuf Kalla and Madame Mufidah Jusuf Kalla, numerous cabinet ministers, and ambassadors of friendly countries.

Soon after attending the Bhayangkara Day ceremony, the president will leave for Medan, North Sumatra, to visit the crash site of an Indonesian Air Force Hercules aircraft.

The C-130 Hercules aircraft hit several buildings before it crashed in Jalan Jamin Ginting of Medan City, at 11:50 a.m. local time, on Tuesday.

The ill-fated aircraft took off from runway number 23 of the Suwondo Airbase, Medan, at 11:48 a.m. local time, but minutes into the flight, the pilot sought permission to return to base.

The aircraft did not reach the runway and instead crashed into an under construction shop house in the Medan Tuntungan sub-district, triggering a conflagration in the fuselage and several buildings.

Several officials, including North Sumatra Governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho and the North Sumatra Police Regional Chief Inspector General Eko Hadi, visited the scene to gather data regarding the casualties and victims.

The ill-fated aircraft, with 101 people on board, was en route to Tanjung Pinang Airport, Riau Islands Province.

The aircraft was scheduled to deliver logistics to Halim Perdanakusumah Airbase in Jakarta, the cities of Pekanbaru, Dumai, Medan, Tanjung Pinang, Ranai, and Pontianak.

By 10 p.m. local time, on Tuesday, as many as 72 bodies of the crash victims were evacuated from the site.

Spokesperson of North Sumatra Police Office Senior Commissioner Helfi Assegaf through a text message on Tuesday confirmed that the 72 bodies have been moved to Adam Malik Hospital in Medan for identification.

"All the bodies will be identified by the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) team," Assegaf noted.

The DVI team of North Sumatra Police will commence the identification process of the victims of the Hercules aircraft crash on Wednesday, July 1.

The identification team is now collecting data from the victims' families, so that they can match the post-mortem and anti-mortem data for identification. (WDY)
