Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands (Antara Bali) -- As many as 61 warships have been deployed to secure Indonesian sea territory in the western parts of the country, Naval Chief of Staff Admiral Ade Supandi said.

The warships were also deployed to ensure that local fishermen no longer need not worry about threats from foreign fishermen.

"The sea territory around Riau Islands is among those that we will secure. So far, the region is safe," he stated here on Monday.

According to the naval chief of staff, the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) has speed ships to protect the waters of Riau Islands and others in the western parts of Indonesia. The speed ships are used to respond to reports of threats or disturbances from foreign parties.

"Therefore, if violations are found in the waters, we will respond to them immediately," he affirmed.

Furthermore, Supandi has asked local fishermen to not worry about threats from foreign fishermen. If foreign fishermen disturb local fishermen, the navy will do its utmost to chase and capture them.

"If foreign parties chase our fishermen, we will chase them in response until they are caught," he remarked after a short meeting with Governor of Riau Islands H. M. Sani.

However, Supandi warned local fishermen against poaching fish in the territorial waters of neighboring countries. They are only allowed to catch fish in Indonesian waters.

They are not permitted to use trawlers to catch fish either, he added.  "They must hold permits to catch fish," he pointed out. (WDY)
