Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesia will apply for a membership in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the period 2015-2017 during the 29th Session of the IMO Assembly to be held in London on December 2, 2015.
"If we become a member of the IMO Council, it will be beneficial for our economy and political policies," the transportation ministry's Director General for Sea Transportation Bobby R Mamahit said here Wednesday.
Seeking an IMO Council membership is in accordance with the government's vision of developing Indonesia into a world maritime axis, he added.
Indonesia has been part of the IMO in 1961 and is strongly committed to contributing to the development of global maritime.
The country has made a proposal for developing the Marine Electronic Highway in the Malacca Strait and the Singapore Strait. The operation of the highway was transferred to Indonesia by IMO in 2012.
Indonesia is a member of the Tripartite Technical Experts Group (TTEG) that was established in 1977 to ensure shipping safety and maritime environmental protection in the two straits. Malaysia and Singapore are also members of TTEG. (WDY)
