Cairo (Antara Bali) - During a donor conference held here on Sunday, the Indonesian government pledged financial assistance worth US$1 million for the reconstruction of the devastated Gaza Strip.

Indonesia and some other countries are committed to helping Palestine revive following Israel's brutal attacks, Wiwiek Setyawatai Firman, the head of the Indonesian delegation to the conference, informed Antara on the sidelines of the conference.

"Regarding the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, Indonesia has pledged emergency aid worth US$1 million," stated Firman of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.

Indonesia had earlier provided additional funds amounting to US$10 million to the UNESCO when Palestine joined the UN body.

AFP reported that international donors pledged about US$5.4 billion in aid to rebuild the Gaza Strip on Sunday and urged Israel and the Palestinians to renew their peace efforts.

The conference was held in Cairo to garner financial support for the reconstruction of swathes in Gaza that were destroyed during the 50-day Israeli military aggression in July-August.

"The participants pledged approximately US$5.4 billion (4.3 billion euros)," noted Norwegian Foreign Minister Boerge Brende while reading out a closing statement at the conference that Norway co-hosted.

Gas-rich Qatar led the way with a promise of US$1 billion in aid to the coastal enclave.

Washington pledged US$212 million and the European Union member states 450 million euros, while the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait pledged US$200 million each on Sunday.

In the meantime, Indonesian diplomat Meri Binsar Simorangkir of the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo remarked that the embassy has approached the Egyptian government to permit the entry of five ambulances donated by Indonesia into the Gaza Strip.

The five ambulances were donated by the Indonesian people through four NGOs: The National Committee for Palestinian People (MNRP), the Jakarta Red Crescent, The Rapid Emergency Response (ATD), and the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS).

The ambulances have been stranded in Egypt since August as the Egyptian government has not yet issued a permit for the vehicles to enter the Gaza Strip.

Food and medicines from Indonesia for the people of Gaza had earlier been sent through the Egyptian Red Crescent.

On October 2, 2014, the PKS presented US$ seven thousand for Gaza through the Palestinian Hospital in Cairo, stated Windratmo Suwarno of the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo. (WDY)
