Palembang (Antara Bali) - Indonesia is targeting its finishing in tenth place at the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games in Palembang, South Sumatra, to be held September 22 to October 1.
"Initially, our target was fifteenth place, but after meeting with athletes and board members of the Indonesia Sports Committee and the Indonesia National Sports Committee, I decided to revise our finishing up to tenth," sports minister Roy Suryo said after a coordination meeting on preparations for the event with the coordinating minister for people's welfare, Indonesia Sports Committee chief Rita Subowo, South Sumatra governor Alex Noerdin and Palembang mayor Romi Herton.
He said Indonesia, as the organizer, would not set an unrealistic target because the event is to include athletes from 32 countries, although confirmation from six countries has yet to be received.
Some world-class athletes are scheduled to participate as members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
"Indonesia must be realistic. Although the athletes it will send to the event are those who will compete in the next Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar later this year, in terms of quality they cannot as yet compete at world-class levels," he said.
