Jakarta (Antara Bali) - A total of 22 people were killed in traffic accidents during Idul Fitri holidays in Jakarta on August 2 - 16, 2013, police said.
"The number of dead victims during this year's Idul Fitri holidays in Jakarta is lower than that in the previous year which stood at 28 people," Adj. Sr Comr. Hindarsono, the head of the legal development and enforcement division of the Jakarta Police, said here on Sunday.
Hindarsono said that the number of the victims recorded during the 'Operation Ketupat' was 27 percent lower than that of the previous year.
He said that in 2012 there were 227 traffic accidents involving 326 victims, consisting of 28 dead victims, 89 seriously injured and 218 lightly injured. Material losses reached at Rp909,870,000.
Based on police records in 2013 there were 166 traffic accidents involving 270 victims. Of the number, 22 died, 67 seriously injured and 181 suffered slight injuries. Material losses were estimated at Rp821,450,000.
In the meantime, Spokesman of Police Headquarters Sr. Comr. Agus Rianto said on Friday that police had recorded 719 people killed in traffic accidents across the country during the post-fasting Lebaran exodus.
"During the 'Operation Ketupat' 2013 which lasted until seven days on Thursday after the Idul Fitri holiday, police recorded 3,279 traffic accidents, with dead victims reaching 719 travelers,"
He said that the number of victims who sustained serious injuries was recorded at 1,184 and light injuries at 4,326.
A total of 6,991 vehicles involved in the accidents. Most of the vehicles were motorbikes, reaching 4,159. (*/DWA)
