Sentani (Antara Bali) - Demand for blood in Jayapura District, Papua Province, is high so that the Indonesian Blood Donors Association (PDDI) continues to popularize the need for donors to donate their blood, a PDDI official said.

"We continue to intensively popularize blood donor in the region because demand for blood much comes from regions. There are many cases in which mothers need blood during labor or thalassemia need blood," PDDI Head for Jayapura District Yanuar said here on Wednesday.

He said that blood security should be increased because the number of HIV/AIDS carriers in Papua was higher where blood transfusion could be a means of the deadly disease spread.

"I hope workers at the blood transfusion unit of Yowari Regional General Hospital in Jayapura to increase blood security and do their jobs based the standard procedures," he said.

Yanuar said that HIV/AIDS was a dangerous disease that killed most sufferers. It is feared the disease would spread through blood transfusion. After all, the PDDI has continued to popularize the importance for blood donor to donate their blood.

"The blood stock at Yowari General Hospital is quite limited. Therefore, the presence of PDDI and the Indonesian Red Cross is very urgent," he said. (*/DWA)
