Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Police said five people were killed in riot and fire at the Tanjung Gusta penitentiary of Medan, North Sumatra when around 150 inmates reported escaping on Thursday night.

"The dead victims included two prison guards and three prisoners who had been treated specially for good conduct and helped the prison guards," police spokesman Ins. Gen.  Ronny F Sompie said here on Friday.

The bodies of the dead victims have been sent to the state hospital of Rumah Sakit Pringadi in  Medan, Ronny said. "The situation is now under control. The fire has been put out," he said.

Around 500 police and 300 military officers still stand guard around the correctional institution , he added.

"Police have rearrested 55 escapees  and have been brought to police offices in  Binjai, Langkat  and  Belawan," he said.

The riot began when the inmates protested over power and water supply failure  since early in the morning of Thursday.

The inmates turned violent breaking the main gate and set fire on the prison administration office. (*/DWA)
