Nusa Dua (Antara Bali) - Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr expressed a hope about the provision of legal instrument as needed by policy makers and experts to overcome the smuggling and human trafficking cases in court prosecution.
"I am looking forward to having proposal to implement the policy guidelines to help countries in making practical steps in the case (legal instruments)," Bob Carr said at the opening of the Bali Regional Ministerial Conference (BMRC) here on Tuesday.
According to him, over the years the illegal movement of people including smuggling and illicit trade continues to grow in Asia Pacific maritime region.
In a conference that addresses the issue of human trafficking, smuggling, and other transnational crimes, Carr also said that based on the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) report, more than 9.5 million people worldwide are displaced, homeless and people without citizenship.
"Unfortunately, where there are weak people, predators also present there. People smugglers are ready to prey on them to get the money for themselves," he said.
As for human trafficking, Carr said that the case is complex, sometimes hidden crimes and human rights violations are involved. (*/DWA)
