Karanganyar (Antara Bali) - Minister for State Enterprises (BUMN) Dahlan Iskan said Indonesia will not import rice this year as stocks and domestic production would be more than enough to meet requirement.

Dahlan said here on Sunday that the country still have 2.5 million tons of ricer in stock by the end of last year held by the Board of Logistics (Bulog) in its warehouses in various areas.

Meanwhile, Bulog is yet to buy 3.5 million tons of rice from farmers under its rice procurement program this year, he said.

"If Bulog could buy 3.5 million tons of rice during this year's harvests, imports would no longer needed for this year," he said.

He said Bulog enjoyed a profit of Rp800 billion  from its rice imports last year  but Bulog used the profit to buy rice from farmers that the price of rice did not decline.

"I am optimistic Bulog could achieve its rice procurement target this year. It only needs to work the harder," he said. (*/DWA)
