Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The advancement of telecommunications and information technology (IT) became a strong drive that boosted the development of the Indonesian tourism in 2012, a senior tourism official said.

"Telecommunications and IT generated the country's economic development and encouraged domestic tourists to travel and make tourism trips," M Faried, the director for domestic tourism promotion of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, said here on Sunday.

He said that thanks to the advancement of telecommunications and information technology, various cultures and beautiful natural scenes could be shown and offered to viewers across the country so that they were attracted to conduct trips to see the scenes directly.

This is one of the main factors why domestic tourism developed relatively well in 2012. "The other factor is that the number of the Indonesian population has reached 240 million besides the increasing number of urban people" he said.

He said that besides the increase in the people's per capita income, about some 6.5 million people  had also emerged as new middle-class people.

"This is coupled with the increasing number of working women that increased the mobility of the Indonesian population," Faried said. (*/T007)
