Jakarta (Antara Bali) - French Ambassador to Indonesia, Corrine Breuzé, has said the Paris Agreement arrived at the UN Summit on Climate Change at the Conference of Parties (COP21) is the first step towards creating a carbon-free world.
"We need to see the Paris Agreement as not only a result but a prelude to the world that is truly free of carbon, as agreed to by the countries," Ambassador Breuzé stated at the opening of the Climate Diplomacy Week here on Tuesday.
He invited all countries, especially Indonesia, to use the momentum of the early ratification of the Paris Agreement to realize the goal of creating a carbon-free world.
France is one of the European Union (EU) member states which has completed the internal procedures to ratify the Paris Agreement.
France is disseminating an action agenda and strongly supporting various efforts undertaken by developing and new growing economies in implementing the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs).
"Together with Morocco, which will be the next chairman of the COP, France as the incumbent chairman of COP today urged all partners, including Indonesia, to support the joint efforts," he added.
The EU is supporting Indonesia through a climate change response program to formulate low-carbon development plans.
Support is required as Indonesia formulates development policies related to climate change, legislation, government institutional practices framework in Aceh to achieve low-emission development plans as well as to facilitate dialogue and the establishment of participatory regulations.
Climate change and environment are the concern areas for the EU and ASEAN for 2014 - 2020 with the main focus on sustainable peatland management.
Currently, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated from ASEAN countries' peatland is equivalent to those produced in Germany, Britain and France. (WDY)
