Minister Wants To Build Monument Against Illegal Fishing

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The Maritime and Fishery Affairs Minister, Susi Pudjiastuti, wants to build a monument to warn people the importance of combating illegal fishing.

"We will build an illegal fishing monument in Pangandaran, West Java," the minister said here Tuesday.

There will be a sinking of 71 ships that were involved in illegal fishing in eight locations all over the Indonesia's waters, she explained.

The ships will be new habitats for fish in a number of locations among others Bali and North Sulawesi, Susi added.

The ministry will also build a detention center for foreign ship crew members who are involved in illegal fishing in Indonesia's waters, she said.

The world today is aware of illegal fishing, and Indonesia has issued a lot of regulations to eradicate such crimes, the minister stated.

"The Food and Agriculture Organization supports us in including the illegal fishing into the agreement meetings," she said.

The Indonesian government's policies have been able to reduce the number of illegal fishing cases and hence give positive contributions to the national fishery production growth, Susi said. (WDY)
