Indonesia Condemns Munich Terror Attack

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The Indonesian government has condemned the terror attack in Munich, Germany on Friday that killed 10 people, including the gunman, and injured at least 16 others.

"Indonesia condemns the terror act in Munich on July 22, at 5:50 p.m. local time, at Olympia Einkaufzentrum (shopping centre)," the Indonesian foreign ministry said in a statement, here, Saturday.

The Indonesian Embassy in Berlin and Indonesian Consulate General in Frankfurt have reported that there were no Indonesian victims in the attack.

The Indonesian citizens particularly in the city of Munich have been advised to avoid the shopping mall area and to take care of their personal security as well as avoid public places where they could be potential terror targets, and to follow the security direction of the local authorities.

"At the time this statement is released, local authorities in Munich are still pursuing the perpetrators, restoring security in the area and cancelling public transport for the time being," the ministry said.

There are approximately 11.780 Indonesian citizens in the Consulate General working territory, including 894 residing in Munich, according to the Ministry's data base. Most Indonesians are students (248), housewives (165), and office workers (151), and private sectors employees (9).

Nine people were killed at the shopping mall, according to the police, British newspaper The Guardian reported. Police said a body, found about 1 km (0.6 miles) from the scene, was found to be that of the attacker.

The gunman has been identified as David S, an 18-year-old, German-Iranian national, who had been living in Germany for at least the past two years.

Police initially described the incident as a terror attack but said later they were describing it as a "shooting" until they knew more.

The shooting started at 5.52pm when gunshots were fired at a McDonald's eatery near the large Olympia shopping centre (OEZ) in the northern Moosach area of the Bavarian capital. (WDY)
