Rabat (Antara Bali/Xinhua-OANA) - Moroccan authorities seized on Saturday 24 tons of cannabis, and arrested 11 drug traffickers in the western port of Larache, official news agency MAP reported.
In this operation conducted in the sea, elements of police and gendarmerie with support from marine patrols forced the drug dealers to abort an operation of transport of cannabis via small boats to unknown destination in the international waters.
An investigation has been launched to determine the international links of this cartel.
Despite efforts by authorities in the past decade to crack down on cannabis farming, Morocco remains a big producer in the world.
Authorities said more than 700,000 Moroccans depend on cannabis production, which is concentrated in the northern Rif mountains. (WDY)
