Merak, Banten (Antara Bali) - About 70 percent or 829,740 travelers celebrating post-fasting Idul Fitri festivities in Sumatra have returned to Java through Merak Ferry Port of Banten, according to Inland Waterway Transportation Service (PT ASDP).
"We predict that the return flow of passengers will peak tonight until the wee hours tomorrow," ASDP Spokesman Mario Sardadi Oetomo said here on Sunday.
He said that Merak Port on Sunday were receiving heavy flow of vehicles and pedestrian passengers coming from Bakauheni port of Lampung in Sumatra.
Though the flow was heavy, transportation of passengers ran smoothly. PT ASDP operated 28 roll-on-roll off (Roro) ships to cater passengers willing to cross the Sunda Strait. The company sets a target of 94 trips of ferries with an accelerated dwell time at the piers from 60 to 30 minutes.
"We have the commitment to providing the best services for passengers so that there would be no delays or vehicle queues," Mario said.
He said his company predicted that about 70 percent or 829,740 travelers had returned to Java. This figure increased by 12,094 persons compared with that in 2013 which totaled 817,646 travelers.
The number of four wheeler vehicles was recorded at 83,786, increasing by 5,236 from that of last year which stood at 78,550. (WDY)
