Kabanjahe (Antara Bali) - A total of 4,739 people have evacuated to safer areas since Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra's Karo district erupted early Sunday, an official said.
The number of evacuees reached 3,710 previously, Karo district head Kena Ukur Karo Jambi Surbakti said on Sunday night.
But by Sunday night the figure increased to 4,739 who were being sheltered in eight different places in Kabanjahe city, he said.
"The number of evacuees is likely to increase in light of the latest developments," he said after visiting evacuees at the GBKP building in Kabanjahe.
Surbakti said he, along with officials of relevant agencies had inspected a number of affected villages on the volcano's slope and all residents of the villages had evacuated to safer areas.
Mount Sinabung might erupt again as it still spewed thick smoke, he noted.
"Residents who live not far from the volcano are being sheltered at evacuee camps in Kabanjabe," he said. (*/DWA)
