Raise Fuel Price if Consumption Exceeds

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Finance Minister Agus Martowardojo said the government will increase subsidized fuel oil prices if the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources failed to control fuel oil consumption.

"If consumption could not be controlled it will serve as a sign for the Ministry of Finance to hike fuel oil prices," Agus said in a working meeting that discussed economic outlook 2013 here on Monday.

He said that there was great potential that consumption would exceed the quota set at 46 million kiloliters in 2013 and increase fiscal burden which had so far continued to hike as a result of swelling subsidized subsidy expenditure every year.

Subsidized fuel prices could be raised to reduce burden on subsidized fuel expenditure and to anticipate failure in the macro assumptions as set in the 2013 state budget, such as the Indonesian Crude Price (ICP), oil lifting and the local currency exchange rate value.

"If our recalculation indicates that the ICP increases and the exchange rate value weakens while we fail to anticipate it then we will raise fuel oil prices," the finance minister said. (*/DWA/T007)
