RI Diplomacy Helps Maintain Regional Peace

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesian diplomacy throughout 2012 worked well in maintaining peace and security order in the Asia Pacific region, Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said.

In the 2013 annual press statement here Friday, Marty said the Indonesian foreign policy has been working relentlessly to protect stability and security in the region against a variety of threats.

For example, Indonesia has projected its role as part of solution to potential conflicts in the South China Sea territorial dispute among claimant countries, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and other forms of threats, he said.

"Indonesian diplomacy has also been working to create an order in the region, either in the form of strengthening institutional capacity in the region," he added.

It is also done in strengthening the norms and principles of relations between states, all of which are intended for the maintenance of peace and security in the Asia Pacific region, he said.

When there is doubt about the common views of the South China Sea, Indonesia moved through the shuttle diplomacy for 36 hours in order to consolidate the position of ASEAN in accordance with the six-point principles, he said.

Furthermore, the Indonesian diplomatic momentum pushed the overall implementation of the Declaration of Conduct (DOC) which includes a regional code of conduct (CoC) through the basic elements agreement, he noted. (*/M038/T007)
