RI's Fishery Potential Predicted To Diminish 40 Percent

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesia's fishery potential has been predicted to decrease by 40 percent as schools of fish are moving away from Indonesian waters to the north due to an increase in sea temperature and climate change.

"Indonesia will witness a decrease in numbers of fish up to 40 percent because they are moving to the northern sea of the country," regional project manager of Arafura and Timor Seas Ecosystem Action, Tonny Wagey said here on Wednesday.

The prediction was based on a study of average sea temperature, chemical substance aspect in the sea and food availability for sea life, according to him.

Therefore, early anticipation of threats for food sustainability is needed, especially for the fishery sector.

Wagey said one of the steps to overcome the threat involves developing and implementing marine cultivation technology to meet the demand of protein source from the sea.(IGT)
