Jokowi Installed As New Jakarta Governor

Jakarta (Antara Bali) - Home Affairs Minister Gamawan Fauzi installed Joko Widodo and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama as the new Jakarta governor and vice governor here on Monday.

Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) respectively replaced Fauzi Bowo and Prijanto following their victory in the run-off election last month.

Former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, who is the general chairperson of the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) that sponsored the Jokowi-Ahok ticket along with Gerindra Party attended the installation ceremony in the plenary session of the regional legislative assembly (DPRD) meeting.

Megawati was flanked by her daughter Puan Maharani who is also a PDIP executive chairperson, but Gerindra leader Prabowo Subianto was not seen in the event.

Several Gerindra Party executives however were seen attending the ceremony including secretary general Ahmad Muzani.

Thousands of Jokowi-Ahok supporters crowded the venue of the event to welcome the installation of their candidates as the new Jakarta governor and vice governor.(IGT/T007)
