Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police Command has prepared 4,000 officers to maintain security in case of possible demonstrations in opposition to a planned fuel price hike.
"We are ready to serve the people and have launched an information campaign to ensure peaceful demonstrations," Inspector General Untung S. Rajab, the Command's chief, said here on Friday.
Rajab added that the police would also be assisted by the military (TNI) in their efforts to maintain peace during demonstrations.
In connection with these efforts, he appealed to the community to refrain from breaking law during demonstrations and to carry out their activities peacefully and with civility, adding that the police were ready to escort the demonstrators.
Command spokesman Senior Commissioner Rikwanto said people wishing to conduct demonstrations must inform the police beforehand, and they must also state their goals, the number of participants, the locations of the demonstrations and the issues to be disputed.(IGT)
