Karangasem (Antara Bali) - Some 1,100 personnel of the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) have been readied to evacuate residents living in villages located within the hazard zone of the erupting Mount Agung.

"Our members are ready to help the evacuees, as we have deployed personnel in full force, and I hope there will be no casualties," Colonel Arch Gede Widiana, commander of the regional military 163/Wira Satya, remarked here, Friday.

Of the 1,100 officers, 285 are stationed in the Karangasem District, and 874 in the districts of Klungkung, Bangli and Buleleng, which have accommodated evacuees displaced by the eruptions of the volcano.

In accordance with instructions of General Gatot Nurmantyo, the TNI commander, military personnel are on standby for 24 hours.

Located in Karangasem, Bali Island, the 3,142-meter-high Mount Agung has been rumbling since August and had erupted on Nov 26, followed by several other eruptions. No reports of casualties have been received so far.

Records since 1800 reveal that Mount Agung had experienced four mega eruptions, respectively in 1908, 1823, 1843, and 1963.

Despite the natural disaster, 98 tourist attractions in Bali reportedly remain safe, and only two percent -- Besakih, Tulamben, and Tirta Gangga located in Karangasem District -- are affected. (WDY)
