Solar Energy Gives Indonesia Additional Power Supply Of 40 GW

Yogyakarta (Antara Bali) - Indonesia's power supplying capacity would increase by 40 Giga watts if all 35,000 households in Java agreed to use 1 kw solar module on their house roofs, an energy expert has said.

"If only 10 percent of the households used the solar modules there would an additional supply of 4GW. This is enough to help the government in reaching its target of developing new power plants with a total capacity of 114 gW in 2025," Arya Rezavidi  from the Study and Technology Application Center(BPPT) said here on Tuesday.

Solar energy fired power modules (PLTS) are cheap only Rp15 million per 1 kWh, Arya said at a discussion forum on "Role of Hybrid Energy Power Generating Technology" held by the office of  Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs.

The price is for long term investment to save households from the cost of paying electricity bill every month for more than 10 years  amid instability of power price.

He said he is optimistic the households and housing developers  would agree to use PLTS  especially as Indonesia already has 12 factories producing solar power modules with a capacity of more than 100 mW per year, although the country still imports solar cells.

Meanwhile, senior manager of the state-owned power utility company PLN for the renewable energy division  Yudistian Yunis said Indonesia is still far lagging behind a number of other Asean countries in  per capita electricity production capacity such as Malaysia, Thailand an Vietnam.

The power capacity  per capita of Indonesia is 207 kW as against Malaysia's 929 kWh per capita  and China's 1,074 kWh .

Malaysia has an installed capacity of 29 gW for a population of only 30 million as against Indonesia's 60 gW but for a population of 270 million. (WDY)
