Banda Aceh (Antara Bali) - Amid tremors following a major earthquake that hit Aceh on Tuesday, hundreds of people in that province left their villages in panic on false report that the quake would be followed with a volcanic explosion early dawn on Wednesday.

People using cars and motorcycles left their villages in the regency of Bener Meriah to Pondok Baru some 6 kilometers away on rumors that Mount Burni Telong in that area would explode.

On Tuesday an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale hit Aceh killing at least 20 people in the districts of Bener Meriah and Central Aceh.

The hardest hit by the quake was the sub-district of Ketol of Central Aceh where a house of prayer collapsed hitting a number of children doing religious duty. (*/M038)
