Denpasar (Antara Bali) -  The number of visits by foreign tourists to Bali surged 21.18 percent to 4.07 million  in the first ten months of the year  from 3.36 million in the same period last  year.

"Those coming  by air totaled 4.01 million  with the rest by sea," head of the regional office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Adi Nugroho said here on Friday.

The regional tourism office has set target for the number of visits by foreign tourists to the country's main tourist destination at 4.2 million this year.

Adi Nugrho said he was optimistic the target would be reached  by the end of this year.

In 2015, the number of visits by foreign tourists totaled 4.001 million , up 6.24 percent from 3.76  million in the previous year , slightly exceeding the target of 4 million visits.

Adi Nugroho said in October alone the number of visits of foreign tourists to Bali totaled 432,215  with the Ngurah Rai airport accounting for 423,140 visits  with the rest recorded by seaports.

The number rose 16.99 percent  from the same period last year , but down 3.03 percent  from September 2016.

Adi Nugroho said an increase  was recorded in the number of visitors  from  nine of ten main countries of origin with a decline was recorded only in the number of visitors from Malaysia. The number of visitors from Malaysia dropped 6.33 percent to 142,616 in the first ten months of the year.

Nine other countries of origin included Australia which accounted for the largest number of the visitors . The number of visits from Australia rose 16.16 percent  from 822,127 visitors in the first ten months of 2015 to 954,957 visits  in the same period this year.

The second largest number was from China up 36.26 percent to 820,345 visitors , followed by Japan  with visitors up 3.78 percent to 199,443, Britain , up 33.37 percent to 185,307 visitors , France  up 27.80 percent to 147,413,  India up 57.60 percent to 143,464,  the United States up 27.85 percent to 138,808  visitors, Germany  up 29.24 percent to 134,168  and South Korea up 0.17 percent to 124,052 visitors.
