Jakarta (Antara Bali) - The Indonesian government will continue its cooperation and push for dialogue initiatives as part of the efforts to maintain stability in the South China Sea, the Foreign Ministry said.

The South China Sea has huge natural resource potential and is strategically located, the ministry stated in a press statement released on Wednesday.

As a result, the area which borders many countries has high geopolitical dynamics and is vulnerable to any escalation of conflict, it added.

The Indonesian government underscored the importance of creating a special mechanism and forum to harmonize the interests of various parties in the South China Sea and to stem potential conflicts in the region, it noted.

To achieve that purpose, the Policy Assessment and Development Board at the Foreign Ministry held its 26th workshop on Managing Potential Conflicts in the South China Sea.

The workshop is part of Indonesia's initiatives to explore ways of cooperation as well as to take steps to build mutual trust among parties connected to the South China Sea through dialogue.

Strong cooperation among all stakeholders will hopefully contribute towards making a concrete progress towards peace, stability and prosperity in the South China Sea.

The workshop which has been held since 1990 was attended by participants from 11 countries, namely, Brunei Darussalam, China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia,  Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan. (WDY)
