Jakarta (Antara Bali) - A ministerial meeting of migrant workers sending countries grouped in the Colombo Process has agreed on a Colombo Declaration to improve the welfare and protection of migrant workers.
"The declaration focuses on five themes covering skills recognition, recruitment ethics, pre-departure orientation, remittance and employment market analysis," manpower minister M Hanif Dhakiri said here on Sunday.
The Colombo Process meeting produced two important decisions including the Colombo Declaration and Cambodia's acceptance as Colombo Process 12th member.
The presence of Cambosia is expected to strengthen the position of migrant workers sending countries in fighting for the imorovement of protection and welfare of workers, he said.
The forum also entrusted the leadership of Colombo Process to Sri Lanka pending the agreement on the election of the next leadership.
It agreed to extend Sri Lanka's leadership until the readiness of a new one, he said.
Colombo Process is a regional consultative forum of manpower ministers of migrant workers sending countries in Asia.
The forum has so far had 11 members including Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
It was established in Colombo in 2003. The meeting in Colombo this year was the fifth after the ones in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2011, Bali, Indonesia in 2005 and Manila, the Philippines in 2004. (WDY)
